    • Our Use of Color Challenge Winner - Capturing Natural Beauty
Congratulations to @Katrina Thompson on winning our Use of Color Photo Challenge!

Katrina Thompson is a passionate photographer who pursues her love for macro, landscape, and wildlife photography while caring for her two young children. With over a decade of experience, her work has been showcased in Carrousel Du Louvre, Canadian Geographic and Sony Alpha Universe. Her ultimate goal is to travel the world, capturing its beauty one photograph at a time.

We connected with her to learn more about how she made this shot.

In Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, there is a serene marsh that plays host to a magnificent spectacle every spring. This tranquil haven becomes a temporary home to many migrating hummingbirds, drawing birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. On a recent visit, I found myself captivated by the enchanting sight of numerous hummingbirds flitting gracefully among the wildflowers, their delicate wings creating a symphony of motion as they indulged in the nectar of the vibrant blooms. The air was alive with the soft hum of their wings, creating a scene of unparalleled natural beauty. I had to remain still and wait patiently for this little bird, who eventually became curious and approached me. It seemed to pose for me while fluttering in front of me.

For this shot I used my Alpha 7III camera. I find that capturing beautiful and memorable moments is a breeze with this camera as it has all the features I need and is unwaveringly reliable. My settings for this shot were 1/5000, F7.1, ISO 800, and focal length 500. I also used a Manfrotto Element Traveler Small 5-section Aluminum Tripod with a ball head which helped in capturing a crisp, clear shot of this hummingbird.

I carefully edited the image using Adobe Lightroom. First, I cropped the image to achieve the perfect composition. Next, I used a brush to create a new mask, allowing me to highlight the hummingbird and enhance the highlights of its wings as well as the saturation of its body. To make a more dynamic image, I applied a linear gradient to darken the foreground while boosting the greens and blues and adding blacks. I also added linear gradients to the top corners of the photo to create a framing effect around the bird, enhancing the highlights and whites. Lastly, I denoised and sharpened the image to ensure its overall quality.

Make sure you check out our most recent photo challenge, we’d love to see your work!

  • Product Highlight - Alpha 9 III

    • "I've been using the Sony A7R5 and A9 III for the past six months, and overall, I'm delighted with their performance, especially for photography. However, while the A7R5's image quality is fantastic, it has some limitations regarding video recording. Specifically, I've encountered overheating issues after about 45 minutes of continuous 8K recording. This is why I wish for a new A9 III (A9 IV? Or A7RVI with GS), ideally with a sensor that offers at least 60 megapixels, allowing for extended 8K recording sessions of up to 2 continuous hours without overheating. This would make it a true powerhouse for high-res photography and long-format sports video work, specifically Soccer. The 8K Sony Camcorders Burano and Venice 2 are expensive for a video photographer like me who used them as entertainment tools to record Soccer games and other sports as a hobby and pastime."
    • Viewer mode in IEDT>right click on image>go to process composite raw shooting>create noise reduction shooting composite image>Select the appropriate settings. Images must be shot in NR composite mode. It won't let you process the raw shootings unless you turned that setting on in camera. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, ask away.
    • Hello OwlDude24! I currently have 2 Sony A1s, and recently purchased the Sony A9iii. I have the following Sony lenses: 600mm; 200-600mm; 70-200mm; 24-70mm; 16-35mm; 50mm; and 90mm. Most often I find I'm working with the 600mm, the 24-70mm, and the 200-600mm. Love the 70-200mm and trying to find more opportunities to use it.  I love both the A1 and A9iii, for different reasons. The A9iii has some incredible features such as PreCapture, 120 fps when needed (and the boost button that quickly gets you there), and what I have found to be an incredible, matchless Eye-AF ability that in my experience surpasses the A1's by quite a bit. But I still love my A1, so much, and the greater resolution of it over the A9iii makes it a solid workhorse for me for much of my shooting. Esp when it comes to small birds small in the frame!
    • Melissa, Im curious to know what camera bodies and lenses are in your kit these days? I have the Sony Alpha 1 and am thinking of getting the Alpha 9iii.
    • Hi Alan. Thank you for your kind words and for supporting Grassroots Baseball! I have mostly been using expanded tracking with the a9iii and had great success.  I feel like it has held on to my subject even when other players cross in front.  Give that a try! Please reach out to my further if you would like.  On IG if that works.
