  1. Four Sony Alpha Cameras Get Huge Firmware Updates and C2PA Tools https://petapixel.com/2024/03/27/four-sony-alpha-cameras-get-huge-firmware-updates-and-c2pa-tools/ Doesn't look like all the updates are actually available yet. The firmware site (https://alphauniverse.com/firmware/) shows the A1 as having the update available, but when you click the link only last year's version can be downloaded. I'm curious to hear experiences from those who update right away. With MLB Opening Day tomorrow and seven games in a row, I'll probably hold off for now.
  2. That's my plan. I got to use the A9III at the college football national championship game, but there was nothing about it that made me want to trade in my A1s at this point.
  3. Can't the A1 do this already? I use the "Display as Group" feature all the time and can delete entire bursts at once.
  4. Thanks Brooke! I switched to Sony about a year ago and use the A1.
  5. Jean is such a great person. I've had the chance to hang out with her during MLB playoffs the past several years and it is always a pleasure. Here we are crammed in next to each other, back in 2018, on the right side of this photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/BonOqghnKa8/ As for sports photos, my profile here is all sports stuff: https://alphauniverse.com/member/#/kevinmcox/
  6. I disagree on the point-and-shoots. If these students are planning to pursue a professional photography career they need to be looking at DSLR/mirrorless bodies. But that budget it going to be tough especially when you start looking at lenses. Is there any chance the paper can provide equipment? Back when I was the photo editor at the college paper we had a DLSR and 70-200/2.8 that could be checked-out for assignments.
  7. I've love to see Sony release: Version II of the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Something similar to the Canon 200-400 f/4.0 w/ built in TC
  8. Looks good. I loved my old Canon EF 70-200 f/4.0 and carried it about 90% of the time over the f/2.8 version. Glad to see I've got that option now with Sony as well as a cheaper lens that can be used for remotes.
  9. Have you tried the Sony NPA-MQZ1K Multi Battery Adapter Kit? We use it for remote cameras and it works great to keep them going for an entire game. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1333268-REG/sony_npa_mqz1k_multi_battery_adapter.html
  10. Try this link: https://alphauniverse.com/prosupport/account/
  11. For a long time I would advise folks to start out with a fully manual film camera to really learn the basics of exposure instead of something fancier with automatic modes. I really think that helped the fundamentals sink in. Almost too bad that isn't a realistic option these days. I definitely don't miss the days of having to rush in from a game to soup film and still hit deadline though. Being able to edit from the camera well is much nicer!
  12. Canon just announced an RF 100-300 f/2.8 zoom and rumors are an RF 200-500 f/4.0 with built in 1.4 converter is on the way. I would love to see some big glass like this come out for Sony!
  13. Well we got the firmware update, but not the new features. https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-1-series/ilce-1/software/00260271 Benefits and Improvements Fixes an issue where the camera may not start when the Mode dial is set to Movie and the NTSC/PAL selector is set to PAL Improves the operational stability of the camera
  14. Something comparable to the Canon 200-400 f/4.0 with built in 1.4 converter would be nice!
  15. Nice to see them fill in the lineup, but I haven't really missed the 300/2.8 yet. For basketball I've found the APC-C crop mode on the A1 with a 70-200/2.8 to be much better than having to constantly switch cameras as the action goes up and down the court. What I really want to see from Sony though is a 200-400/4, maybe with a built-in TC. That is the lens I really miss since I switched from Canon. It was great for a wide range of sports and came in handy on news assignments as well.
  16. I'm a big fan of the Think Tank Photo rollers and have several.
  17. As a sports photographer, for me a roller is the best option. I use the Think Tank Photo Airport Security primarily.
  18. I have mine set to the same function, APS-C mode.
  19. I've got the APS-C crop mode function of the A1 mapped to the custom button on the lens which comes in really handy when shooting sports. The thing that really annoys me is that none of the Display (blue) menu options can be assigned to the custom buttons, or added to the My Menus, on the A1. There are several I'd like to use but can't.
  20. I need to decide on a wide angle zoom: #FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM , #FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM or maybe #FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G.

    Moving to Sony

I started with Pentax and then shot Canon for 28 years. I loved the gear and CPS always treated me well. But when I left my newspaper staff job earlier this year and had to turn in my company gear, I found myself at a crossroads. I tried both the Canon R3 and the Sony A1 and decided for now Sony has the better camera. Pricing was also more favorable and more importantly availability was better (Sony 400/2.8 within a week vs. being on a waiting list for the Canon RF 400/2.8). If the R1 was already out who knows if I would have switched or stayed with Canon. If history is any lesson I do think when Canon finally releases the R1 it is going to give the A1 a run for its money though. It is always good to have competition and keep the manufacturers innovating.
  22. I'm also a fan of Think Tank gear, they are the only bags I've used for a while now.
  23. But aware that only the very latest release of macOS is patched against all security vulnerabilities. That means as of today, macOS 13.0.1.
