  1. It is an amazing video camera, but I'm more of a still shooter. I personally would love to see the new features of the ZV-E1 in a new A7s4, I can justify the extra cost. But as an introductory, almost pure, video camera it is amazing FF without breaking the bank.

  2. I agree with Tony, losing continuous AF might be a deterrent to a lot of photographers. But DMF has its place. I usually use it for moon or landscape shots. It gives me the manual focus to fine tune my focus, but at the start it does a single autofocus to reduce my manual work to get there. Once at the ball park (in 1 ms) the manual focus ring is the next step.

Think of it as a manual focus with an automated starting focus point at where you want it.

  3. The magical "auto" setting is intended to be a problem solver.  Unfortunately, it can create more problems then it solves.  I have all my cameras set for back button AF.  The auto mode does not revert back to shutter=AF-On.  Handing a camera set to back button AF to an inexperienced user who expects to simply "press the shutter button" to take a photo is not going to work.  I've been in that situation before and ended up just having the other person use a phone to take a picture.  It was simpler than changing my BBAF settings or trying to teach them how to push two buttons at once.  Since the memory recall modes don't store the shutter+AF setting, you cannot use one of those as a "custom" auto mode either.

The "auto" mode is really only designed to work on a camera that has all other settings in default.  That makes it really useless for more advanced users wanting a quick "just press here" mode when handing off a camera.  "Auto" really should either be removed or enhanced to set custom button and dial options back to defaults too.

I had the exact scenario happened a while ago. I also back button focus and have everything customized to my workflow. My friend even though he broke my camera when it didn't make a sound with he depressed the shutter. I had it on silent electronic mode.

My reasoning was that you rarely hand over an A1 to someone that doesn't know how to handle a camera and have them take some pictures. And as you mentioned, the custom recall is just frustrating, and I don't want to remember everything and set it every time I format my memory. That is why I would like to see a custom setting in place of Auto in the new iterations of flagship bodies.

  4. I agree with Tony. I have had students with cameras that are far beyond their ability and without the green button, they would not know where to start.

But would someone buy the A1 without knowing what to do with it?! Those would be a rare specie.

I'm only talking about the flagship cameras though. I do believe Auto is necessary for intro and some mid-level bodies though.

  5. The green "Auto" setting was handy recently. I was at an event with a friend (a visual artist). I handed them my A1 with 24-105, showed them how to use the zoom ring, and they were all set.

I use the Program setting when I hand my camera. But I never had a non professional asking to handle the camera, non-photographers tend to steer away in fear of breaking it.

  6. I don't have an issue with it being there. When I teach intro classes, I tell people if everything is going haywire and they don't know what to do, use green auto and figure the rest out later. I don't think I have ever used it, but I do think it can be useful if something is going wrong and you don't have time to figure out why.

It makes sense to have it as a teaching setting, but does it make sense to have on a flagship body? I understand on intro bodies, as I don't think someone would start their photography journey with the A1 for example (only in rare occasions).

If something goes wrong, wouldn't Program suffice? It is almost the same as Auto.

  7. I'm surprised to still see the "Auto" setting on pro bodies, such as the A1 and A7R5. I believe who every is going to pay that price tag should have already passed that skill level. Even more so in this era of internet knowledge and advices from experienced photographers. Program should suffice if someone wants the camera to control everything.

Personally, I would like to have a 4th custom settings selection instead for quick changes. Three are not enough for my setups anymore, and if Sony decides to go for 5 I would be even happier.

What do you think? Is the "Auto" setting a waste on those cameras?

  8. This looks like fun, will give it a try, I studied software engineering for 2 years back in 2009, lets see if I remember any of it lol

If you go with wordpress, I suggest you start from Bluehost as the host. And from them you're directed to wordpress. The reason is, you will be guaranteed to have your site built on wordpress.ORG which gives you more tools and freedom than .COM (which is paid extra).

I only reviewed some html and css for extra customization. Other than that, Elementor was excellent (I installed the pro paid version).

  9. I just stick my eye to the view finder. I rarely use the LCD screen. The view finder helps me only look at my scene without the distractions and keep me focused. Not to mention I did that during film days and it's subconscious now, just like back parking.

  10. I design my website using wordpress. I'm an engineer, therefore I like to take more control and enjoy coding my site. It's fulfilling to me personally. But it is also possible for anyone that doesn't want to code, using simple builders like Elementor.

I plan to use either photoshelter or smugmug for my galleries, but my site will be the portfolio.

  11. First I have to say is wow! I don't think I could shoot 10000 to 20000 in 3 weeks even if I just keep pressing the shutter while eating. I admire the dedication Ira and the efforts in all parts of the process you take.

Do you not do any passes during the trip? let's say while transiting from one area to another. I'm assuming you're taking more photos during transits.

Would kindly elaborate on the memory part of the process. For example, where do you offload the images during the trip, once you start the selection process, where do the the final passed images go for processing, and where the rejected images live after a pass.

  12. Thank You definitely a bucket list location for viewing the northern lights, I live locally so I get to see some nice views of the night sky and northern lights.

I'm not thinking of the northern lights, I'm thinking of the highland games. I enjoy sports photography and travel, and this is one of the ultimate combos in the world. Not to mention the atmosphere and history.

  13. When I first looked into this, I noticed that Spencer Camera advised against modding my A7RII as it has a known IR leak. If this wasn't not the case, I definitely would have made the conversion by now, but this has given me the opportunity to think more about what my intentions are and what body would be best.

Spencer's Camera are very good and reliable. I never thought of modifying a high res sensor. If I modified a camera it would be the A7Siii, specifically for astro. Spencer's even have them in stock new.

Personally I don't mind loosing the resolution for the low light (energy) capability.
