  1. for my hybrids win. I love video and photography the same, so having both in one camera is amazing. I do like using old cameras tho. We get spoiled by the amazing cameras we have now. Those older cams give us a reminder of what things were like when WE were growing up!

I saw a beast of a Sony camcorder at the thrift shop yesterday...definitely was from the 80's. This timeline is pretty interesting -https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/CorporateInfo/History/sonyhistory-f.html....we've come a long way indeed!

  2. Camcorder style! There’s something magical about vlogging with a camcorder to me. I picked up an early 2000’s Handycam a few months back and it's been a blast! While I do have a "newer" 2017 Handycam I still like the old ones because they were small, cute, and the video quality was horrible, but perfectly nostalgic.

    Thoughts on camcorders?

  3. I love vlogs that have no talking, just captions. It feels like you’re reading a book and watching a movie at the same time ( I'm not a big book reader, but I can read captions all day!) Of course, throwing some type of chill music behind it is needed but it's great to show your thoughts in different ways.

What do you think about vlogging in this way?

  4. I'm always finding the most unplanned, minimal effort-type of videos end up doing the best. It's kind of disheartening when you pour your heart and soul into something and have a good feeling about how it will be received, only to see the view count on it be low, but these are the uncontrollable truths of being a creator, right? Glad to hear you're repurposing a ton of content !

  5. I will replay as a viewer, I don't have knowledge or experience as a videographer.

I prefer less to no movement shots; as you said it is more calming. When meditating, it is always the intention to stay still (to be grounded and present). This allows the eyes to wander slowly within the frame and enjoy the scene. Movements do take away from the calming effect of what's in the shot. Not to mention, it might create some motion sickness to some people or a headache. That's why gaming companies have added options to turn off camera shake and motion blur, and the choice of a center dot.

great to hear your perspective on this!

  6.  I think there was a fad for a while where we needed all those crazy whip pans, swoosh effects, etc. And let's not forget zoom transisitions lmao. I think those still work for short form content. But for YouTube vlog stuff? I much prefer the smoother vibe.

Also, I think we have to remember, that people are watching us...FOR US. I think all the extra stuff sometimes disconnects us from our viewers!

I would definitely agree that people are watching us for us!

  7. I used to want a bunch of hyphy footage, gimbal movement and just a bunch of camera movement in general, but lately I've been Inspired by the still life.  This is typically a vlog style that's shot on a tripod with very well composed framing. I find that the less movement there is, the more calm the video feels and I'm loving that.

Do calming vlogs shot in this way appeal to you?

  8. The ideal is the 3-2-1 rule, but to many it is costly myself included. I use a small local NAS and a synch cloud service that works with my NAS. But until all the files are transferred to the NAS and backed up in the cloud, they are kept in my SD cards and portable external drive.

    what NAS do you have?

  9. I highly recommend investing in a solid NAS (Network Attached Storage) system for archiving, backup, and even operations. It's a great way to store files locally but also be able to access them from anywhere in the world.

I've looked into a NAS system forever. I think it's time to finally take the plunge. Thanks for confirming!

  10. There's an Instagrammer I follow  that vlogs by showing herself doing seemingly mundane things. She rides her bike, reads a book, make cookies and so on. She very rarely does talking head videos.  I love this idea and its something I want to explore in 2023.

I love this! what's her account?

  11. This is a great question!  I used to keep all the footage but then I found I rarely went back to look for old footage.  As I shoot everything for my Vlog in 4K, the files are pretty big and they take up an appreciable amount of room so here is my solution, at least for now.  Once I finish a vlog post, and I've added all the titles, music, etc, then I publish it to YouTube.  Once it's finished uploading and I know it's there, I strip away all the titles, voiceover, music.  I then restore the ambient noise of each clip and export another copy of the finished video.  I keep both of those videos and then I trash all the other footage.  So far so good.  What I found is that sometimes I may need a short clip from an older video (rarely) but if I pulled it from what I uploaded to YouTube, there would often be a voiceover or titles on it and the ambient audio would be gone.  So this way, I effectively keep the best of the edit and with the nat. sound.  I hope this helps you!  pm-r 🙂

This is a great suggestion on workflow, Thank you for sharing!

  12. It is memory demanding to keep them, luckily not the same for stills. But since they are past due, why not create B-rolls and keep that on the side when you need any. Then dump unnecessary files.

    It's productive-procrastination, or a type of it.

good idea! I never dump footage though, I'm somewhat of a hoarder in the digital world lmao

  13. Shooting things is easy...the hard part is dumping all the footage and editing it. I've built up a fairly large archive of vlog footage that often times, takes forever to file manage and ends up going to waste because I feel like it's "outdated" by the time I'd post it.

What are your thoughts about old vlog footage that you've never posted? Do you still work on it, or just move on to more relevant stuff you've shot?

  14. Vlogs have traditionally been low priority for my content release, but lately I've been thinking it should move up the totem pole.  I feel like future clients can get a better sense of your workflow and who you are, if you have more vlog content up, so vlogs could be a good thing for marketing yourself.

Where do you prioritize vlogs in your content?
