  1. This is the first trip I took after buying my first digital camera and it was a full frame. Not a Sony, but the infamous Nikon D600 (I was lucky to not have any oil leak issues).

Every time I go through my images to make a sample portfolio, print or teach, this image is always there. This was taken in Arashiyama in Kyoto. This gentleman was pulling my wife and I in a rickshaw and was very informative and entertaining.

Could contain: Back, Person, Skin, Tattoo, Road, Tarmac, Adult, Male, Man, Head

This is such a tough question to answer. There have been many memorable moments that have left an impact on me. However, I think what ignited my passion for photography was my trip to Antarctica. Having so many amazing close encounters with wildlife in their natural environment and seeing their beauty up close left me with a new appreciation for wildlife, nature, and photography.

Photos below taken with the a7III and 70-200mm F/4 G OSS:

Close Encounter with Humpback Whale (from my pov)

    Chinstrap penguin and the babies

    Penguins can really fly

I need to go there soon! It looks amazing to see it with my own eyes.

  3. I'm still looking for mine. Since I'm shooting different genres, it is difficult to narrow them down. I've recently created a number of style presets to tweak and find what I like. But each light leads me in a different direction too. I guess I'm adapting to light, time of the year and subject matter.

    I'll come back when I'm 95% sure.

I am going to try stacking once the 16.6 stop filter arrives. I'll first start with a couple NDs on top and UV and in addition to the H-alpha 6nm wavelength filter, I hope it will be enough. I read a couple articles saying the 16.6 stop for the ND filter is supposed to be the minimum for solar photography. Hope its true. I read most H-alpha filters for solar imaging and observation is supposed to be at 0.03nm. Very tough to find a H-alpha filter.

You have a lot of time to experiment. Look for companies that modify sensors for astro photography. They might have an idea where to get them or they might have something in house to help.

As an alternative method, I think I might try using the ND 100,000 (5.0) 16.6 stop filter (whenever the backorder gets fulfilled) with the H-alpha 6nm clip-in filter along with the 200-600mm lens and 2x TC on crop mode.

The ND filter will not protect the sensor, it only stops lightwave in 1 dimension (if angled perfectly). The light will lose energy (amplitude) but will maintain the same wavelength. And so will the photons and phonons, those are the culprits that could damage the semiconductor sensor. And semiconductors are sensitive to wavelength.

Have you tried stacking the clip-on with the cheap filters?

  6. Is there a dedicated pro support website? The only thing I could find is the "Join in" webpage on alpha universe.

I'm not sure how I could communicate some technical issues or get some trial equipment.

  7. AVCHD is a proprietary file format, made by sony and panasonic. Not a lot of devices deal with this file format, after all it not the common "playable" format. This of it as something between a raw file with less data info. I suggest you upload them directly into a computer and use an NLE to process them.

Hmmm.... I think the main use case for the auto would be the spur of the moment situation when you don't have time to fumble for changing settings.

But that's where the custom settings come in. I have one set up for overcast street photos, another for panning shots and the this for portraits. This leaves me with my manual setting for general work. If we can get more custom settings, that should give us more "presetting" for other kind of shots.

With the "green" auto, you might end up with a slow shutter and you want the opposite, or smaller aperture when you need it to be wider.

I agree for only the a1.  That body should not have the green Auto setting.  The rest should as so many photo enthusiasts buy all the rest of the bodies but the a1 is different IMHO.

I can't wait to see what upgrades they make to the A1, it should be very interesting in terms of hardware. Hopefully some of their engineerings are reading around these forums.

  10. I'm mainly using the 35mm GM and 135mm GM for now. My 85mm GM is on sabbatical for the next couple of years.

I cannot see myself going where than 35mm for portraits. It's just a feeling that I have, 24 and 14 are cool lenses, but they don't give the satisfaction of the 35. The 135mm, now those are some amazing shots. This is all true if I'm working with one person. For groups, I relay on the 24-105mm G, it's great for the craziness of working with too many people.

  11. Few days ago Dunna Did It made a video on how to capture video as a 1 person team. He mainly talked about outdoors though. As for indoors, I've seen some adding a large monitor to their setup to view themselves and take test takes to ensure good focus. As for light and composition, that comes with skills and experience, and good quality gear.

  12. I would love a 24mm T/S LensBrew. I'm with you - I'd rather create "in camera."

I understand. That would be amazing to do in camera, and not buy and carry another piece of gear. I'm skeptic when it comes to the processing part. Sony needs to work harder on elevating the performance of their softwares first though.

  13. I had Divi for Wordpress for a while and realized that just going ahead and learning code was a whole lot easier!

Knowing some code would be helpful with wordpress. I wasn't intrigued much by Divi, although it looked the easiest. I ended up with elementor and I do add my own spin codes. I found the whole process of learning and achieving results, even in coding, satisfying.

  14. I used to wish for tilt/shifts, but with software, not so sure we need them anymore.

But a tilt/shift as sharp as the 24mm GM and very light, will make life easier. It would require few shots to chose from, and save memory while out shooting. The computer will be happier and faster. And it would be a great choice for photographers that don't have focus stacking option in their bodies.

  15. One of my favorite tips is to pull movie stills into Photoshop and analyze the colors. It is a more precise way to 'get under the hood' of the color grading and handling of highlights and shadows.

I do that from time-to-time but I feel there is a key information I'm missing. I believe I need someone familiar with film color grading to explain what each element was done to a scene and why. And I don't mean what emotions to stir, I got that.

I also sometimes wish I don't need to go to photoshop to do so, but lightroom is limited. If only capture one would have subject masking as good or better than photoshop. That would be the jackpot for editing.
