  1. The new Sony a7rV is a great camera. Some of the physical features that attracted me were the new flip out/ tilt out screen and the programmable exposure compensation dial. And I love the shutter curtain that comes down when the camera is turned off - similar to the Sony a1 camera. This is a game changer for keeping dust off the sensor. Of course the new AI driven autofocus means we can concentrate on composition and moments and worry less about focus issues. With all these additional features what types of photography will this innovative camera be best used in?

I think it event and wedding photographers will be able to make great use of the focusing system and the ability to crop in on the 61 megapixel sensor. Landscape photography is another area where this camera will shine. Where would you use this camera?

  2. As a busy working professional my time is eaten up not only doing photos but dealing with the business of my photography.  I try to find time to go out and shoot for myself, but my personal images are disjointed and very random. I have done some personal 'projects' that help me focus on a single topic and helps me create a body of work that is very cohesive.

That being said, the random images I take keep my photographic vision very sharp, and also keeps me nimble and very familiar with my gear. If i don't use my gear regularly I need time to get back in the rhythm of the connection between my hands and my vision. And of course I love using new equipment and personal photos are great way of getting accustomed to a new body or lens. How much time do you spend on shooting personal work?

  3. I could definitely see the benefits and I thought I would use it a lot more. I don't photograph people though, so wildlife is the only thing I'd use it for and the electronic shutter sound is actually pretty subdued. So I stopped using silent shutter mostly because I filled up my cards too fast. I need that audible sound to let me know how much I'm shooting.

Of course sometimes if you are close to the animals and don't want them taking off the silent shutter could be useful.!!😁

  4. I found a very simple rain cover that i bought many years ago online.. It has an opening at each end with a draw string and i always have it in my bag, it is made for the average zoom, not longer glass. The more expensive ones are too complicated. In a pinch i take a shower cap from the hotel and cut a hole in the other end .!!

  5. Beautiful soft colors. As far as the tractor position, normally i don't place my subject in the center, but rules are made to be broken and sometimes the center works. It is really a matter of personal taste which image is better. It's your photo, pick what you like

  6. I switched to Capture One a couple of years ago. I am able to get to the color I want a bit faster than in lightroom. The other plus for me is that I like the cataloging system. I can have multiple catalogues open and move photos around very easily. LIghtroom does not have this ability.

  7. I really love using the Silent/electronic shutter on my Alpha cameras. At first it took a while to get used to not hearing the sound of the 'click'. I solved this by setting the camera up so I see little flashes  - it assures me that I really am taking photos. I know many photographers use silent shutter in very quiet and sensitive situations, however I also find it great for photographing people. We all have experienced our subjects rolling their eyes and lamenting - ' don't you have enough photos already'.  The silent shutter solves this problem as no one is hearing the clicks so they don't know how many images you have shot. Of course when you are photographing professional models you want the sound of clicks as models make small changes to their poses after they hear the sound.

The only issue I have with the silent shutter is when I am shooting under cheap LED lights and banding occurs at higher shutter speeds. The newer Sony cameras scan a lot faster and have gotten much better in these situations.

What is your experience and preferences for shutter selection?

  8. I have been using Xperia since the Xperia 1 first version, and have updated when new versions have come out. I just got the the new Xperia 1iv and am very happy with it. I really like the quality of the images from the phone, and the various lenses. It is the only phone i use!

  9. On a related note to the blower, I learned from the last Sony Kando cleaning technicians not to do something I used to do. I used to hold the camera up with the sensor facing down and blow in to it. I don’t recall why, but they actually said just lay it on the table and use the blower at an angle across it. Does it make a difference? I have no idea, but I thought it was interesting that they told me not to do it the way I always was.

And while I have tried cleaning the sensor a few times on my own, I never fully trust myself so I try to wait until I have an opportunity to have a cleaning by the pros.

Interesting, I do it the same way with the sensor facing down thinking that the dust will fall out😁
