1.4X Teleconverter

I have a 1.4x teleconverter, the lenses focus for a split second, then go out of focus. Manual focus is OK.

I am using an old A37, money is very tight, with Sigma lenses.

Is there a setting somewhere in the camera where I "activate" teleconverter?
