  1. I start a photographic project. My friend and former Sports Illustrated staffer Ron Modra taught me this. He has one incredible project he worked on called "The Blues" where he photographed as many blues players from BB King to kids in dingy bars. Did it all in B&W. There is a link on my YouTube site. Says it kept him creative during his off time... Personally - I am working on a Infrared Project from a IR-Converted Sony aIII.
  2. What does the song Sailing (written 40 years ago by artist Christopher Cross) have to do with landscape photography? Hint: The entire song is a metaphor... How do I know? I was at a Christopher Cross concert Thursday evening!
  3. In Gary Hart and my NZ Winter Workshop we spend a couple days at Mt. Cook NP Drew. It is a designated dark sky location and is amazingly beautiful - then again, the entire South (and North) Island are beautiful!
  4. I love this lens Patrick. It is tack sharp as you know throughout the entire zoom range yet light enough to carry in my backpack. I love it for both action and landscape. Matches beautifully with both the Sony 1.4x and 2x! Think of that - a 1200mm lens in a backpack. I've made some amazing landscapes with this combination that was never possible before.
  5. Hey Matt, I have had my office and camera gear listed with Tom C Pickard in LA for over 25 years. Never an issue with a claim and even stood behind me in a nasty lawsuit where an image was stolen by a mega-giant corporation. A David vs Goliath Story. I was swept into the freezing North Atlantic at Diamond Beach in Iceland this past January with my Sony a1 and 16-35mm GM. Both were toast as salt water and camera gear don't mix. They sent a check within 2 weeks! They specialize in insuring photogs and videographers (of course, being in Hollywood). I highly recommend them!
  6. Hey Ben, on my Sony a7RIV and my Sony a1, go into Operation Customize > Custom Key Setting and apply it to the button of your choice. What you want to set for that button is: AF/MF Selector Hold (this is the key). Now when you push this button it acts as a toggle to go from AF to MF - you do not have to push and hold. Leave your lens switch to AF and your Dial on the camera to MF. Simple and it works. Let me know if you have any issues... BTW - you can either leave your main shutter button on or off on your camera - really doesn't matter...
  7. Thanks for the information - now on my bucket list!
  8. I used to use Epson Printers exclusively but now have changed to online labs. My favorite is Bay Photo Lab (bayphoto.com). Excellent work and excellent customer service!
  9. My biggest challenge is to continually force myself to get out in the elements. I truly believe when the tourists are heading in, we landscape shooters should be heading out. It is uncomfortable (wet, cold, early, late) but is when the good stuff truly happens.
  10. I agree with you and @monica Ira. I am EVF all the way... Being a landscape photographer, the edges are very important to me and looking through the EVF with my non-shooting eye closed down, I can see my edges very clearly. I try to eliminate bright tones and parts of external elements that don't belong.
  11. Another NP that is on my bucket list @bjohnson. I live on the west coast but need to spend a few falls traveling back east. When does the fall color begin in Blue Ridge Parkway?
  12. That is a great way to travel to our National Parks Monica. The next 6 weeks will be awesome - I love this time of the year!
  13. I have just returned from Grand Teton National Park where I completed my Fall in Grand Teton NP Fall Workshop. So many good parks to choose from. What is your favorite?
  14. I tend to go grand view too often - I have to keep reminding myself there are great images everywhere to be made - just need to keep tuned-ion to what is right in front or below me Caroline.
  15. I'm sure they will Drew - they just keep amazing us!
  16. I love all of these images but especially your B&W's! Love the way you get the model(s) to engage the viewer!
  17. One of my favorite National Parks in the United States is Grand Teton. We were up early for the hour drive to this beautiful new location Ron Modra and I discovered yesterday. We thought it best to photograph it at sunrise and it did not disappoint! What is your favorite National Park to photograph? Mt. Moran and Jackson Lake Sony a1, Sony 24-105mm, Singh-Ray Neutral Polarizer
  18. Beautiful images... turning pro means wearing many hats during the course of a day. I'm with Tony on books, sadly they are a dying entity in today's world but electronic books are booming. Perhaps a mixture of the two might be the way to go. If you treat the business like a business and stay dedicated to improving and moving forward you will make it. Best of luck. Reach out if you have any questions.
  19. One of the key aspects I really love about the Sony a1 is the ability to change quickly from photographing landscapes to action. I had just captured a setting sun over a bay with lit clouds when this flock of cormorants flew overhead in front of this sunset-lit cloud. With a flick of a dial I was shooting 30fps and nailed both images - how cool is that? How many of you are finding multiple uses for the a1. With 40+ years of pro work under my belt, I can confidently say this is the best camera I have ever worked with!
  20. It's a rush - may not be the smartest type of photography one can do but the results are usually spectacular Ira.
  21. Smart way to do it Tony - frame grabs are awesome!
  22. Here is one from last June from New Zealand's South Island. Sony a1 + Sony 14mm GM f/1.8.
  23. I don't Caroline. First off I use a lightning app to see where the lightning is firing. Lightning can jump up to 5 miles so I try to be sure I am far away and not right in an approaching cell. If I was out on a prairie, I would set the camera on a tripod outside the car with the trigger then get back inside. I would not be out in the open 🙂
